Now in its fifth year, the Channel NewsAsia Luminary Awards not only give due recognition to the best business minds in Asia, they are also a means to inspire and motivate the business community and industrialists to achieve excellence in their respective fields.

Main Criteria
  • The company must be headquartered in Asia.
  • The company's main business must deal with at least an Asia-wide market and must have made an impact in the region.
  • The recipient/company must display high levels of integrity, business acumen as well as leadership.
  • The Lifetime Achievement and Future Business Luminary Awards are handed out to individuals while the Innovation and Green Luminary Awards are handed out to companies.
  • The recipient/company must be a newsmaker on any of the MediaCorp platforms.

This award celebrates the business that thrusts Asia's strength in development and innovation to the forefront be it in terms of technology or the service sector.


  • Must be involved in a business which develops, nurtures or creates new technologies/services or products.
  • The company must have at least 200 employees with a minimum turnover of USD 50 million.

With environmental sustainability becoming a key to business success, this award identifies the Asian company that leads in employing green practices in its main business practice.


  • Is from a company whose main business is the employment of green practices.
  • The company must have at least 200 employees with a minimum turnover of USD 50 million.

This award recognises the businessperson who epitomses the Asian entrepreneurial spirit and shows leadership promise to drive the business internationally.


  • Must be a young entrepreneur.
  • Business must represent forward-thinking business ideals.
  • Must embrace risk to take business to a higher level.
  • The company must have a minimum turnover of USD 10 million.

The most prestigious award of the night honours a business person whose success serves as an inspiration to others and whose achievements are iconic to the success of the Asian region.

Selection Process
  • Recipients of the Channel NewsAsia Luminary Awards undergo a stringent selection process. This year, Channel NewsAsia has teamed up with Deloitte Analytics, DP Information, GreenA Consultants and Singapore Management University to oversee the process.
  • Together with our Knowledge and Research partners, candidates will be shortlisted from the Innovation, Green & Future Business Survey and analysed based on quantifiable quality data under stringent, objective and transparent criteria. This includes financial performance, creativity, innovation, social responsibility and the ability to create short-term advantage, long-term value and competitive edge.
  • Nominees will then be evaluated and determined by a distinguished and independent jury panel consisting of world-renowned management strategists, academics and corporate personalities.

    Ms Janet Ang
    Systems of Engagement & Smarter Cities
    IBM Asia Pacific

    Ms Janet Ang is the Vice-President of Systems of Engagement & Smarter Cities, IBM Asia Pacific, covering Australia & New Zealand, India, ASEAN and Korea. Ms Ang is responsible for helping governments and organizations improve, integrate and add intelligence to systems such as transportation, public safety, water, energy, buildings, towns, citizen and employee engagement, and urban management that contribute toward achieving sustainable economic and community development. Prior to this role, Janet was the Managing Director of IBM Singapore from 2011 to 2015.

    In her 33 years in the industry, she has worked in Japan, China and Singapore, holding various senior leadership positions in management, sales, marketing and operations. Ms Ang serves on the board of the Public Utilities Board (PUB), the InfoComm Development Authority (iDA), the NUS Institute of Systems Science (ISS), Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Center (NVPC) and Caritas Singapore. She served on various committees including the Medishield Life Review Committee and the Women's Health Advisory Committee (WHAC). Ms Ang is a member of Business China and is President of the International Women's Forum (Singapore chapter). Ms Ang holds a Business Administration (Honors) degree from the National University of Singapore.

    Professor Arnoud De Meyer
    Singapore Management University

    Professor De Meyer is the fourth President of Singapore Management University. Previously, he was Director of Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge where he was Professor of Management Studies and Fellow of Jesus College. He was associated for 23 years with INSEAD where he held various senior academic and administrative positions, including founding Dean of INSEAD's Asia Campus in Singapore.

    He is an external director of Dassault Systèmes SA (France), as well as a board member of the National Research Foundation, Singapore International Chamber of Commerce, Temasek Management Services and Singapore Symphonia Company Limited. Prof De Meyer has been consultant to a number of companies throughout Europe and Asia and his works are published widely in academic journals and books.

  • Walter Fernandez
    Mr Walter Fernandez
    MediaCorp Pte Ltd

    Mr Walter Fernandez is the Editor-in-Chief of MediaCorp. A Singapore Press Holdings scholar, he started his career in journalism in 1995 at The Straits Times, writing on both politics and economics. He rose to be one of the paper's senior correspondents and was seconded to help then Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew with his memoirs. He joined MediaCorp in 2001 as the Night Editor at Channel NewsAsia Singapore where he was responsible for its flagship local news bulletin Singapore Tonight.

    In 2004, he took over as Executive Editor of Channel NewsAsia International overseeing the channel's correspondents and international coverage. In 2006, Mr Fernandez joined TODAY, as its Editor and in July 2013 he was appointed Editor-in-Chief – overseeing all news and current affairs content across all of MediaCorp's television, newspaper, radio and digital platforms.

    Mr Peter Ter Kulve
    Unilever Southeast Asia & Australasia

    Mr Peter Ter Kulve is President of Unilever Southeast Asia and Australasia, and also President of the board of Unilever Indonesia, which is listed on the Jakarta stock exchange with a market capitalization of USD22 billion.

    Prior to his current role, he was the Chairman of Unilever Benelux and President Dutch Unilever Companies. From 2005 to 2009, he was the Global Head (EVP), Ice Cream Category, where he was acknowledged for developing a repeatable growth model for emerging markets.

    Peter has held a number of general management roles, including Chairman Iglo-Mora Group Holland, where he was instrumental in setting up the One Unilever organisation. He also spent five years in Beijing and Shanghai as Chairman, Walls China.

    Mr Kulve read Monetary Economics and Business Administration at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. Together with his wife, Dorothee, they are actively supporting Friendship Bangladesh, a holistic and integrated development organisation. In 2012, they helped to turn Greenpeace's second Rainbow Warrior into a hospital ship for Friendship Bangladesh.

    Ms Ong Chih Ching
    Executive Chairman and Executive Director

    As Executive Chairman and Executive Director of KOP Limited, Ms Ong Chih Ching is responsible for the company's vision, development, strategic planning and growth of the Group's business. Previously, she was the chairman and founder of KOP Properties Pte. Ltd., and Chief Executive Officer of KOP Group Pte. Ltd.

    She was a founding partner of the Singapore law firm, Koh, Ong & Partners, specialising in corporate and real estate transactions. She then co-founded Koh, Ong & Partners Management Services Pte Ltd in 1999, providing secretarial, consultancy and corporate management services to better meet the needs of high-net-worth individuals and private and public equity institutions.

    Named as one of the 50 Power Business Women in Asia by Forbes Asia Magazine in 2014 and 2015, Ms Ong is also an Outstanding Entrepreneur awardee at the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2014 by Enterprise Asia. She is the Founder and First Honorary Secretary for the Securities Investors Association (Singapore).

    Ms Ong graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Buckingham in 1991. She was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1994.

    Mr Jim Rogers
    Investment Expert and Author

    Mr Jim Rogers is an author, financial commentator, adventurer, and successful international investor. After attending Yale and Oxford University, he co-founded the Quantum Fund, a global-investment partnership. During the next 10 years, the portfolio gained 4200%, while the S&P rose less than 50%. Mr Rogers then decided to retire – at age 37. Continuing to manage his own portfolio and travelling, he kept busy serving as a full professor of finance at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, and, in 1989 and 1990, as the moderator of WCBS's 'The Dreyfus Roundtable' and FNN's 'The Profit Motive with Jim Rogers'.

    Two of Mr Rogers' Guinness Records were for circumnavigating the world by motorcycle for two years and by car for three years. The trips were chronicled in Investment Biker and Adventure Capitalist. Mr Rogers' recent book A Gift to My Children is a heartfelt, indispensable guide for his daughters (as well as for all adults and children) to find success and happiness. His latest memoir Street Smarts: Adventures on the Road and in the Markets was published in February 2013.

    Head, News and Premier
    MediaCorp Pte Ltd

    Ms Debra Soon is responsible for the business operations and management of the News and Premier segments in MediaCorp. She also heads the TV operations team for the company.

    As head of the News segment, she oversees the programming, branding, marketing, circulation and distribution of Channel NewsAsia, TODAY newspaper, the digital platforms channelnewsasia.com and TODAYonline.com, and the Radio station 938LIVE. The role involves enhancing the strategic, commercial, and consumer value of the products, with a view to improving the profitability of the segment. She has similar responsibilities for the Premier segment, which includes the classical music station Symphony 924.For TV operations, she oversees the acquisition of programmes for all of MediaCorp's English and Mandarin TV channels and the online interactive service, Toggle. She also manages the centralized operations teams which handle scheduling, playout, subtitling and standards.

    With over 20 years of experience in the media industry, Ms Soon was appointed Managing Director of Channel NewsAsia in March 2009. She was then responsible for the editorial content of the English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil news and current affairs platforms in MediaCorp, as well as the business operations of Channel NewsAsia. Ms Soon is a mentor/member of Board Agender and an executive committee member of UN Women, formerly known as UNIFEM Singapore. She is also on the Business Advisory Board of the Behavioural Sciences Institute of the Singapore Management University.
